1 Dead After Shooting at Manhattan 7-Eleven, Police Say

A dispute inside a Midtown convenience store led to a shooting that killed a local panhandler, with police continuing their search for the gunman.

  • At about 10:25 a.m. on Feb. 12, emergency personnel pronounced a man dead after a shooting inside the Midtown 7‑Eleven store at the corner of Eighth Avenue and West 39th Street near the Port Authority Bus Terminal, with Midtown South Precinct officers and EMS responding.
  • Sources familiar with the case report two men argued inside the store before one brandished a gun and struck the victim, an unidentified man believed to be a panhandler, in the neck.
  • Investigators recovered ballistic evidence and began a camera canvass as police describe the fleeing suspect wearing a dark green jacket, black face mask, black pants, and carrying a black backpack running southbound on Eighth Avenue.
  • So far, no arrests have been made, and authorities asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS as detectives sealed off the area around the 7-Eleven.
  • Local workers, including concierge Thomas Lane, said neighborhood conditions have worsened in recent years, and witnesses described hearing expletives before gunfire and fleeing the scene.
