Bicyclist Killed, 2 Injured In OC Crash; Woman Arrested

A 43-year-old Long Beach woman faces felony charges after striking three bicyclists in a bike lane, killing one and seriously injuring two others, police said.

  • Monday morning, Oct. 20, one man was killed and two other bicyclists hospitalized after a Mercedes struck them on Pacific Coast Highway between Beach Boulevard and Newland Street, just past 6:45 a.m.
  • The driver, 43-year-old Amber Kristine Calderon of Long Beach, was arrested about one-half mile from the scene and faces suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, and possession of narcotics.
  • A gold 2006 Mercedes E-Class struck cyclists riding in the bike lane, leaving debris strewn as much as 50 feet, and Ron Wortman said, `They were hit from behind`.
  • Emergency crews treated victims and cleared the scene as all southbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway from Beach Boulevard to Newland Street temporarily closed, reopening shortly before 1 p.m.
  • The coroner identified the cyclist as Eric John Williams, 45, of Garden Grove, and the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is probing if impairment played a role; police urged witnesses to call 714-536-5670.
