EU will not lift any sanctions against Russia, von der Leyen says
Zelensky urged leaders to approve 70 billion euros more for defense and resilience as the EU weighs new sanctions and a budget gap.
On Friday, President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Brussels, Belgium, for the second day of an EU leaders' summit, ready to discuss support for Ukraine's energy grid, the 2027 budget, and the EU membership bid.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa stated the EU will not lift sanctions against Russia, asserting Russia failed to respect Trump's energy ceasefire.
Von der Leyen announced the European Union is working on a new 22nd package of sanctions against Russia, declaring "we have to increase the pressure." This follows Russia's ceasefire violations.
Costa and von der Leyen congratulated President Volodymyr Zelensky for passing reforms allowing Kyiv's EU membership bid to proceed earlier this week, with Costa stating, "you can count on us."
Officials plan to announce a dedicated task force to help Ukraine advance the rule of law, a requirement for the country to unlock essential support funds and achieve EU membership.
The EU has already approved EUR 90 billion for the years 2026 and 2027, but the money is not enough. Ukraine's President mentions the size of the financial gap at the EU summit.
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski asked for €70 billion in addition to his European allies on Friday at the summit of Brussels Heads of State and Government, AFP reports.
