Monterey · MontereyCOVINGTON — Mrs. Mary Beth O’Neil Moody, 67, of Covington, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025, at her residence.
Mrs. Moody was born Sept. 17, 1957, in Virginia, the daughter of the late William Frank O’Neil and Mary Hardy O’Neil.

Monterey · MontereyMONTEREY — Judge Edward K. Stein granted a request from Highland County Commonwealth’s Attorney Megan Yelen to appoint a special prosecutor to oversee the recall petitions against two Highland supervisors.
Yelen submitted her request Jan. 7, to avoid any appearance of impropriety; Yelen and the supervisors have clashed over her request to the State Compensation Board to go full-time.

Highland state park could be open to public by this fall
Monterey · MontereyMcDOWELL — The owner of Mountain Oasis in McDowell is hoping to find a buyer for his gas station and convenience store before he closes the business.
The move would leave all of Highland County with only three gas stations, two of which are located in Monterey. The other is Rexrode’s Country Store at Forks of the Water.
Patrick Smith has owned Mountain Oasis for four years, and said he made the decision to close with a heavy heart.
