FDA Authorizes New Treatment for Screwworm Infestations in Dogs
The prescription chewable is authorized for treatment only, after the FDA said evidence suggests benefits outweigh risks and no alternatives were available.
- On Thursday, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization for Zoetis Inc.'s Simparica TRIO to treat New World screwworm infestations in dogs and puppies.
- Originally approved in 2020 for heartworm, flea, and tick-related indications, Simparica TRIO received this new indication to provide additional treatment options during the public health threat.
- Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas, J.D. stated, "The FDA continues to authorize products to give veterinarians and pet owners multiple treatment options," noting the agency's containment success to date.
- Timothy Schell, Ph.D., director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine, urged dog owners to stay informed rather than alarmed, noting NWS has only been detected in Texas and New Mexico.
- Simparica TRIO is available only by prescription due to professional monitoring requirements, joining Elanco Animal Health's Credelio, which received an emergency use nod last year for the same indication.
