Soccer-Belgium Urge Calm After Lukaku Scores in Away Win at Croatia
Romelu Lukaku scored his 90th international goal as Belgium used the win to test tactics and build confidence before the World Cup.
On Tuesday in RIJEKA, Belgium secured a 2-0 victory over Croatia, with Romelu Lukaku, Belgium's top scorer, netting his 90th international goal after a 12-month absence from the team.
Coach Rudi Garcia warned against rushing Lukaku's recovery, noting the striker played less than one hour for Napoli this season and told reporters, "We need to bring him along step by step."
Captain Youri Tielemans gave Belgium the lead after a defensive slip, while veteran midfielder Kevin De Bruyne called it a "tight, closely contested match" despite the dominant second-half display.
De Bruyne noted the team was "quite compact" and "didn't give away much," though he acknowledged "there are aspects where we can play better" heading into World Cup preparations.
Belgium faces Tunisia in Brussels on Saturday before traveling to the United States to meet Egypt in Seattle on June 15 for their opening Group G match.
Romelu Lukaku celebrated his return to the Belgium national team with a record 90th international goal as they beat Croatia 2-0 away in a pre-World Cup friendly.
