Mugabe's Son Faces Assault Charges in Zimbabwe Linked to Luxury Car Smuggling Case
Police say the five face assault charges after a ZACC investigator was attacked during a probe into two South Africa-registered luxury vehicles.
- On Tuesday, police arrested Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and four others at the Brompton Guest Lodge in Harare following an alleged assault on a Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission investigator.
- The arrests followed an investigation into a Lamborghini and a Mercedes-Benz GLE 53, both registered in South Africa, which authorities suspected were being illegally kept in the country.
- Although Zimbabwe Revenue Authority records indicated the vehicles had exited the country, investigators discovered both at the lodge; permits for such imports are generally limited to 30 days.
- All five suspects face assault charges and were expected to appear in court on Thursday, November 5, 2026, following the incident.
- Chatunga, the youngest son of late former president Robert Mugabe, has previously faced law enforcement encounters in Zimbabwe and South Africa, including allegations involving cannabis and a shooting incident.
