Zelenskyy: Sell Us Patriot Missiles, We'll Stop Strikes On Russian Refineries
Zelenskyy said 500 Patriot interceptors could help Ukraine defend against Russian attacks as supplies dwindle, while deliveries may take years, officials said.
On November 1, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed halting strikes on Russian oil refineries if Washington provides Patriot air defense missiles. Zelenskyy told Fox News that Kyiv would cease attacks for one month if the U.S. supplies the interceptors.
The proposal addresses President Donald Trump's demand to stop targeting energy sites, which have driven global fuel price inflation. Zelenskyy argued that Russia's ongoing attacks on Ukrainian electricity and gas infrastructure force Kyiv to respond in kind.
Although the State Department approved a $2.1 billion sale of Patriot interceptors on October 30, Zelenskyy warned that the 500 missiles could take "several years" to arrive. He emphasized Ukraine requires immediate defense packages for winter.
Asked if the request attempts to leverage Trump, Zelenskyy denied any concerns, stating "I don't have any concerns when I share the truth between partners." Patriot missiles remain critical for intercepting Russian drones targeting Ukrainian cities.
Alex Plitsas of the Atlantic Council noted that while the Patriot announcement is significant, it fails to address Ukraine's immediate needs. He warned Russia aims to force capitulation by freezing the population during winter.
Faced with inflation driven largely by rising energy prices caused by conflicts in Iran and between Russia and Ukraine, Donald Trump demanded that these two countries stop attacking each other's energy sites.
