Zcash Co-Founder Proposes Ending ZCG’s Funding Stream

Sean Bowe says Zcash’s grants treasury can fund years of spending, while the network still adds about 144 ZEC a day.

  • On Monday, Zcash co-founder Sean Bowe published a proposal to end automatic funding for Zcash Community Grants , redirecting 8% of block subsidies to the Network Sustainability Mechanism instead.
  • Bowe argues the grant program's treasury is large enough to cover years of spending without new inflows, while questioning the governance structure where a five-member committee selects grants without a separate coinholder vote.
  • With an illustrative ZEC price of $1,300, Bowe values the program's remaining balance at $125.3 million. Currently, ZCG receives about 144 ZEC daily, worth about $68 million a year.
  • The proposal would not immediately cancel financial commitments already approved by the program, as projects with milestone agreements continue receiving payments. Redirected funds would instead be held in the NSM reserve for future mining rewards.
  • Published on the Zcash Community Forum, the proposal remains open for community discussion before proceeding. It currently has no activation date and would require a formal network rule change to implement.
