Young Kyiv couple killed in a fierce Russian airstrike hoped to start a family, mourners say
The couple captained the Kyiv Floorball Club and were among 24 people killed in the strike, Ukrainian officials said.
- On Thursday, a Russian cruise missile flattened an apartment building in Ukraine, killing 24 people including Kyiv Floorball Club captains Maryna Homeniuk and Orlov, in what Ukrainian military officials described as the war's biggest barrage.
- Maryna Homeniuk, a 24-year-old English teacher, returned to Ukraine in 2023 after living in the Czech Republic and met 30-year-old Orlov on a dating app.
- Despite differing interests—he loved sports and she loved art—the couple cared deeply for one another, with Homeniuk attending Orlov's games on Sundays while she taught him English and he taught her floorball.
- On Saturday, loved ones paid final respects to Homeniuk, with friend Olesia Yukhnovych stating, "I should have been helping prepare for the wedding and I ended up helping prepare for the funeral."
- Colleague Anastasiia Petrushyna reflected on the loss, saying, "This is a girl who had absolutely the whole future ahead of her," adding, "This future will no longer exist—our youth basically can't have it.
