Yankees catcher Austin Wells has cervical headaches, joins Judge and Stanton on injured list
Austin Wells joined Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the 10-day injured list as New York added catching depth with Ali Sánchez and J.C. Escarra.
On Saturday, the New York Yankees placed catcher Austin Wells on the 10-day injured list with cervical headaches, selecting Ali Sánchez's contract from Triple-A Scranton to bolster the catching position.
Wells and Escarra provided a production void at catcher, with Wells batting.166 in 47 games this season, prompting the Yankees to seek a different offensive look behind the plate.
Sánchez, the Yankees' first right-handed hitting catcher since Jose Trevino, batted.227 with six homers in 40 games at Triple-A Scranton while throwing out 27.9 percent of base stealers.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone recalled Escarra for roster depth, saying, "Hopefully Ali can come up here and provide a little bit of a spark and a different look too."
Although Ben Rice has emerged as an American League MVP candidate, Boone stated moving the team's best hitter behind the plate is "not on the board right now.
