WTA roundup: Liudmila Samsonova upsets top seed in Guadalajara
Samsonova reached her first semifinal of the year after a three-set win over Marta Kostyuk and will face Peyton Stearns or Sloane Stephens next.
- On Thursday, eighth-seeded Liudmila Samsonova upset top-seeded Marta Kostyuk 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico, reaching her first semifinal of the year.
- Advancing through the draw, Samsonova received a first-round bye and a walkover when Taylor Townsend withdrew for emergency surgery. The 27-year-old Russian previously reached the quarterfinals of three other events this year.
- Elsewhere, second-seeded Iva Jovic routed seventh-seeded Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-1, while sixth-seeded Cristina Bucsa of Spain eliminated third-seeded Sara Bejlek 6-0, 6-4 to advance.
- The Guadalajara Open semifinals will feature Samsonova against the winner of Thursday night's match between Americans Peyton Stearns and Sloane Stephens. Jovic will face Bucsa in the other bracket.
- In other tour action, Open Mary Stoiana defeated Dominika Salkova 7-6 , 6-1 in Sao Paulo to reach her first WTA Tour quarterfinal. Stoiana, 23, next faces second-seeded Paula Badosa.
