WSJ: Putin Floats a Summit With Trump and Xi to Decide Ukraine’s Fate
On Sunday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a trilateral summit with President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss ending the four-year war in Ukraine.
Putin first suggested the meeting during an October 9 call with Trump, which simultaneously produced a deal for the U.S. to purchase Russian diesel fuel.
The Kremlin suggested holding the talks on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen, China, on Nov. 18 and 19, without inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump has not agreed but may be receptive, according to a senior U.S. official, even as the President claimed on Sunday that Zelensky "doesn't want to end this war, and probably never did."
Analysts warn that excluding Ukraine from the summit could trigger European backlash while advancing China's diplomatic ambitions, though neither the White House nor the Chinese Embassy in Washington has commented.
