Joxe Azurmendi passed away yesterday, Tuesday, in Donostia, at the age of 84. Philosopher, high-ranking thinker and intellectual, poet, essayist, professor emeritus of the University of the Basque Country, honorary Basque scholar and, above all, a Basque and Basque-loving person, Azurmendi has left a material legacy of 40 books and more than 500 articles in Basque society. He was born in Zegama in 1941 and at the age of ten, on his own initiativ…

Joxe Azurmendi (Zegama, 1941-2025) was a writer, philosopher and essayist. He made a great contribution to literature and thought, not only as an intellectual, but also as a lifelong activist in the Basque language and cultural movements. Among other things, he was one of the founders of the Summer Basque University, and was an active member of the Jakin group for many years.
