A central figure in Galician culture and literature, he was a numerical member of the Royal Galega Academy since 1993 and also presided over the entity between 2013 and 2017.

The writer, essayist, philologist, historian and academic Xesús Alonso Montero (Vigo, November 28, 1928) died this Thursday in the same city where he was born 97 years ago. The professor also served as president of the Royal Galician Academy between 2013 and 2017, succeeding Xosé Luís Méndez Ferrín, also from Vigo.
