Spreading Stickers for a Solution: Woman Using Decals to Find a Kidney Donor
The decals on her car and more than 70 others direct donors to a website as Schmidt seeks an O+ or O- match.
Amanda Schmidt of Overland Park, Kansas, created AI-designed decals seeking a living kidney donor, placing the stickers on her car and more than 70 others with the message 'I need a Kidney.'
Schmidt has Polycystic Kidney Disease , a genetic condition running in her family for five generations; cysts on her kidneys compress her organs and lungs, requiring removal soon.
Finding a donor is complicated by Schmidt's need for rare blood types O+ or O-, as waitlists for these types are longer because recipients can only receive O-positive or O-negative blood.
Schmidt launched KidneyForAmandaPKD.com, accessible via QR code on the decals, allowing passersby to scan with their phones and learn how to donate; she said, 'My hope has been renewed.'
Schmidt's creative campaign aims to connect her with a living donor who can save her life, as anyone passing the decals can access information about her condition and the donation process.
