World Athletics to launch standalone marathon championship from ...
World Athletics plans to launch a standalone World Marathon Championship from 2030 under a major overhaul of the distance running calendar, the sport's governing body said on Tuesday.
Currently, the marathon remains an integral part of the World Championships through 2029, but from 2031 it will no longer be contested at the World Championships.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said, "We are delighted to be exploring the possibility of a standalone World Marathon Championships with Athens, the place where this iconic discipline was born."
Matching the current frequency of the World Championships marathon, the new event will be held annually with male and female athletes competing in alternate years.
Discussions regarding the debut are underway with Athens, while the annual Road Running Championships will continue as a separate event under the new roadmap.
In the marathon, the world champions will be determined annually from 2030 in an independent championship and no longer within the framework of the World Athletics Championships. This was announced by the international umbrella association World Athletics, which writes of a strategic decision in favor of the future of the long-distance race.
