Working Apple I signed by Steve Wozniak sold for an impressive $1.15M
The rare 1976 computer is one of 74 verified Apple I models and came with a Steve Jobs letter and original accessories.
- On October 14, the "Hatfield" Apple-1 computer sold for $1,148,200 at auction through Bonhams, setting a world record for a commercially sold Apple-1 and surpassing pre-sale estimates of $500,000 to $800,000.
- Named after original owner Fred Hatfield, who purchased the machine in 1976, the unit features a signature from Steve Wozniak and a 1978 letter from Steve Jobs offering to trade it for an Apple II model.
- Two bidders competed for 28 minutes before the auction closed, driving the price past estimates for one of only 74 verified Apple-1 units remaining and among the very few still in full working order.
- Bonhams specialist Ian Ehling called the result an "exceptional result," noting the machine previously sold for $686,000 in 2013, demonstrating the continuing appreciation of early computing hardware.
- The auction coincided with Apple's 50th anniversary year, and Bonhams noted the included letter demonstrates how personally involved Jobs and Wozniak were in designing and producing the company's first products.
