Woman receives letter in the mail 72 years after it was sent
A letter from 1953 written by Benedict Gross during his Army service was found in a mailbox near the Gross family farm as part of a return of decades-old letters.
- Anna Moch discovered a letter dated June 10, 1953 that arrived just days before Christmas 2025, addressed to the Gross family of Kintyre, North Dakota.
- Valentine Gross said he mailed a collection of family letters to Benedict in Georgia, but the envelope arrived empty, with only `Kintyre, North Dakota` on it.
- The envelope bore only `Kintyre, North Dakota`, its seal was broken, and Moch said she had to really look at and study the date.
- More than 70 years later, the letters are slowly being returned to the Gross family, with one ending up with Moch and other Gross brothers receiving some, though about 15 remain missing, Valentine said.
- As the letters resurface, Benedict Gross's Army letters reveal daily life, reconnecting the Gross family farm near Anna Moch's home with long-time neighbors and family history.
