New Zealand Police Dismiss Rape Allegation Against Cape Verde Soccer Captain and Charge Accuser
Police say the allegation against Ryan Mendes was not substantiated after months of investigation, and a 40-year-old woman faces a false-statement charge.
New Zealand Police dismissed a rape allegation against Cape Verde soccer captain Ryan Mendes on Friday, instead charging a 40-year-old woman under the Crimes Act with making a false statement.
Detective Inspector Scott Beard said the claim involving an alleged assault at a central Auckland hotel in March was not substantiated after months of investigative work by the Adult Sexual Assault Team.
Mendes' lawyer Karl Trotter told media his client is "thrilled to finally be able to get this behind him," describing the outcome as a complete vindication after intense international media speculation.
The 40-year-old woman charged with making a false statement is scheduled to appear in an Auckland court on Tuesday, November 10 to face the allegation.
Allegations had resurfaced during the 2026 World Cup while Mendes guided Cape Verde to the Round of 32, though he remained free to play throughout the investigation which concluded this week.
