Woman arrested after two young children die in house fire

West Midlands Police said the woman remains in custody as detectives and fire investigators work to establish how the blaze started.

  • On Friday, April 24, a house fire in the Blakenhall area of Wolverhampton killed two boys aged one and three. Emergency services responded to the blaze on Mason Street shortly before 8:30 p.m., where paramedics declared both children dead at the scene.
  • West Midlands Police arrested a woman in her 30s on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of the children. She remains in custody as of Saturday, April 25, as detectives continue enquiries into the circumstances.
  • Before emergency services arrived within five minutes of reports, two other children and a woman had already escaped the Mason Street property. Paramedics checked the survivors, who did not require hospital treatment.
  • Detective Chief Inspector Kylie Westlake of the Public Protection Unit stated, "This is a truly tragic incident and our thoughts remain very much with those who loved the children who have been lost." Police urge witnesses to call 101, referencing log 5640.
  • Specialist officers are supporting the family during this difficult period while a police cordon remains in place. Authorities conduct door-to-door enquiries and review CCTV footage from the surrounding area to establish the fire's cause.
