Elderly Woman Mysteriously Found Dead at Nursing Home
Police are reviewing CCTV and awaiting toxicology results as they investigate whether a substance contributed to the 84-year-old resident’s death.
On Thursday, emergency services discovered an 84-year-old woman dead at Our Lady of Consolation aged care facility in Rooty Hill, Sydney. NSW Police arrested her 53-year-old daughter at the scene shortly before midnight.
Detective Superintendent and Mount Druitt Police Area Commander Darrin Batchelor said the daughter allegedly "administered a substance to the older woman." Police are reviewing CCTV footage to probe the circumstances of her presence late at night.
Batchelor noted the daughter has "no criminal history" and "no medical training." A nine-year-old boy present during the incident is now in the care of family in Sydney.
Toxicology and autopsy reports are pending to determine the cause of death. Officials stated it is "too early to determine" if the incident involved an assisted dying scenario, with no charges filed yet.
Voluntary assisted dying is legal in NSW but subject to strict eligibility criteria and medical approvals. Our Lady, which cared for 336 residents in the 2024/25 financial year, is cooperating with investigators.
