Police Say Needle Found in Halloween Candy in North Cowichan (BC)

Police say no injuries were reported as investigators seize the items and probe two suspected tampering cases in Durham Region.

  • Duncan RCMP issued a warning Thursday after a "sewing-like needle" was found in Halloween candy collected in the North Cowichan area. Thankfully, the needle was discovered before anyone was hurt.
  • Trick-or-Treating in the areas of Lane Road, Drinkwater Road, Herons Way, Highfield Road, and Westview Street led to the discovery. Police advised residents in these neighborhoods to double-check their snacks before consuming them.
  • Across the Greater Toronto Area , similar reports of foreign objects in candy emerged earlier this week. Separate incidents in Ajax, Pickering, and Oshawa involved embedded wire and sewing needles discovered during Halloween trick-or-treating.
  • Durham Regional Police and the RCMP urge parents to inspect all Halloween candy before consumption. Anyone discovering suspicious items should contact North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250 748-5522.
  • Investigators have seized the items to determine how foreign objects became associated with the candy. Police have not indicated whether the separate incidents across North Cowichan and the GTA are connected.
