B.C. hospitals declare Code Orange after several injured in bus crash
RCMP said multiple victims were hurt, some seriously, and two hospitals declared Code Orange as ambulances and an air ambulance responded.
On Wednesday, a bus chartered by a contractor for data centre company IREN crashed on Highway 39 south of Mackenzie, British Columbia, injuring multiple people. Two hospitals declared Code Orange, designating a mass casualty event.
Emergency crews deployed multiple ambulances and an air ambulance to the remote highway crash site, located about 180 kilometres north of Prince George. RCMP closed Highway 39 to facilitate rescue operations and emergency response.
The Northern Health Authority declared the mass casualty status at both hospitals. The health authority stated, "We do not have details to share at this time about the number of patients involved, or their conditions; our thoughts are with those who've been impacted."
RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Brett Urano urged the public to avoid the area, stating "drivers should expect significant delays and are encouraged to check DriveBC before travelling." IREN said its "immediate concern" was for those on the bus and their families.
Highway 39 remains closed as traffic agency DriveBC advises motorists to use caution on detours. Mackenzie Secondary School confirmed none of its students were involved but dispatched a bus to the area to provide support to those impacted.
