Winner Declared In NJ 4th District Congressional Race: AP
The Associated Press said Smith’s win extends his House tenure to 24 terms as he defeats Democratic challenger Rachel Peace.
On Tuesday, Rep. Chris Smith secured his 24th term in the House, defeating Democratic challenger Rachel Peace 143,360 to 101,136 with 85 percent of precincts counted.
Smith has represented New Jersey's 4th District for over 45 years, serving since 1981 alongside Kentucky Republican Hal Rogers across 40 towns in Monmouth and Ocean counties.
Locally, he secured $23.8 million in federal funding while championing legislation combating human trafficking and Lyme disease, and pushing to restore the SALT deduction eliminated by the Trump administration.
In Alabama, Democrat Shomari Figures retained his House seat in the 2nd District, securing 55 percent of the vote against Republican Rhett Marques despite a GOP-friendly congressional map.
Nationally, parties vie for the 218 seats required for House control, with Republicans maintaining a slim 218-seat majority and Democrats holding 214 seats in the chamber.
