Will Smith hits 1st leadoff HR as Dodgers beat Giants 5-2, regain sole NL West lead
On Thursday, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants 5-2, reclaiming first place in the National League West after Will Smith hit a leadoff home run in the first inning.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts placed Smith in the leadoff spot while Shohei Ohtani sat out for a second consecutive night, with Roberts describing Smith earlier as "unflappable."
Pinch-Hitter Alex Call delivered a two-run single to extend the lead, while starter Emmet Sheehan allowed two runs over six innings before the bullpen shut down San Francisco.
Jung Hoo Lee tied the game briefly in the fifth with an inside-the-park home run off Sheehan, becoming the first Giants player to accomplish the feat at Dodger Stadium.
Los Angeles now heads to Anaheim for a weekend road series against the Angels, with LHP Blake Snell scheduled to start Friday against Angels RHP Jack Kochanowicz.
