Will Netflix Now Own CNN, HGTV & TLC?
Netflix will acquire Warner Bros. studios and HBO Max, excluding traditional TV networks which will form a separate company launching in summer 2026.
- In a deal announced Friday, Netflix plans to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, excluding Warner Bros' film and TV studios, HBO, HBO Max, and the Global Linear Networks.
- Competing bids from Paramount Skydance and Comcast lost the $72 billion bidding war for WBD, while David Ellison, Paramount Skydance CEO, reportedly sought CNN in his bid.
- On the network side, favorite shows on TLC, HGTV, and AEW on TBS and TNT, plus CNN and the Global Linear Networks, will remain outside Netflix's acquisition.
- Regulators will review the deal, and the Trump administration will have to review transactions between Netflix and Warner Bros, while Discovery Global could be acquired separately.
- Those traditional TV assets will spin off as Discovery Global, excluding the Global Linear Networks, with the new company expected to launch in summer 2026.
