Will MLB add new teams? One owner thinks expansion would be 'stupid'
The bid features balloons, politicians and Dusty Baker as Sacramento argues it has the money, land and fan support for a team.
MLB commissioner Manfred has discussed expansion for over a decade, noting that potential proposals for a split-season format and an in-season tournament would require at least 32 teams.
Nashville and Sacramento are currently viewed as the most popular potential expansion sites, with Sacramento's ownership group recently showcasing their passion during a presentation featuring manager Dusty Baker.
One owner told USA Today, "Expansion would just be stupid," due to concerns that adding more small-market teams could reduce the individual revenue payouts shared among existing franchises.
Other team officials express skepticism regarding the league's growth, as one owner noted expansion is not "being discussed right now," while an executive added they "don't think it's going to happen."
Major League Baseball has not expanded since 1998, when the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks joined the league, posing a significant historical hurdle for commissioner Manfred to navigate.
