Wild's Matt Kiersted’s confidence growing as he logs vital minutes
Kiersted has played seven of eight games and nearly 14 minutes a night as Minnesota fills gaps left by four injured defensemen.
With injuries sidelining Brock Faber, Jared Spurgeon, Zach Bogosian, and Olli Maatta, Minnesota Wild defenseman Matt Kiersted has assumed a larger role in his second season.
Before signing with the Wild in 2025, the 28-year-old spent five seasons bouncing between the Florida Panthers and their AHL team in Charlotte after playing collegiate hockey at North Dakota.
During Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Islanders, Kiersted logged nearly 14 minutes; coach John Hynes praised his performance, stating, "He's got a great stick, competes hard."
Kiersted's reliable presence allowed the Wild to waive Daemon Hunt, subsequently acquiring prospect Cameron Crotty from Ottawa to finalize a defensive rotation while waiting for injured veterans to return.
The Elk River native acknowledged a new level of comfort with the team's system and staff, noting, "Theyre watching and paying attention and following me, so its cool to be home and have that respect.
