Massive Fire South of Timmins Still Out of Control
Officials said the fire remains out of control as buses and support services are arranged for evacuees and pets.
About 200 residents of Mattagami First Nation are being evacuated as the Timmins 9 wildfire continues burning out of control west of the community.
Chief Jennifer Constant ordered the evacuation Tuesday after consulting the Ministry of Natural Resources regarding fire behavior; the fire ignited Sunday and has grown to approximately 460 hectares, located 14 kilometres from the community.
Residents are being relocated to Barrie, where community leaders arranged support services, and Constant confirmed the Ontario SPCA will assist with pet care at the evacuation site.
Bus evacuations of about 160 people began Wednesday morning; some residents signed waivers to remain, though emergency workers must leave if the fire advances within five kilometres.
The last full wildfire evacuation of Mattagami occurred in 2012 due to a previous forest fire also named Timmins 9, as fire season intensifies across northern Ontario.
