Maple Ridge Wildfire ‘Contained,’ Not a Threat to Properties, City Says
Crews from Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue, the BC Wildfire Service and UBC Forestry worked overnight as the blaze remained out of control.
A wildfire ignited near the Rock Ridge area of Maple Ridge on Friday evening, prompting about 25 firefighters to battle the 1.5-hectare blaze overnight in steep terrain near the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest.
The BC Wildfire Service classified the fire as 'out of control,' though Maple Ridge Fire Chief Dave Samson noted crews contained the blaze with no new growth since Friday; human activity is suspected as the cause.
Authorities confirmed there is no immediate risk to the public or nearby properties, with no injuries reported to firefighters or residents; however, smoke may continue to impact some residents in the area.
Firefighters continue to monitor the site alongside the BC Wildfire Service, while officials urge the public to avoid the area and refrain from operating drones that could interfere with firefighting operations.
Maple Ridge Fire Chief Dave Samson warned the region has entered a dry season, urging residents to stay prepared with emergency kits and evacuation plans as wildfire conditions can change quickly.
