- CommBank is warning customers about sophisticated callback scams that impersonate legitimate bank call centres, according to Shannon Brown, CommBank's Fraud and Scams Industry, Intelligence and Disruption Senior Manager.
- Instead of asking users to click links, the scam begins with an SMS or email prompting targets to call a specific number, creating a convincing, simulated call centre experience.
- Scammers often cite the first six digits of a card to build false trust; Brown notes these digits are standard across card ranges, not personal information.
- Once the victim calls, fraudsters attempt to harvest sensitive data like passwords or authentication codes, even requesting remote access to the victim's computer.
- CommBank urges customers to cut off contact if a communication seems suspicious and verify requests through official channels like the CommBank app or the number on their card.
