Why Minnesota punted on men’s World Cup

Minnesota Sports and Events withdrew from consideration to host the 2031 FIFA women's World Cup, citing failure to establish a sustainable funding model during the recent legislative session.
MNSE leader Matt Meunier championed the Sports and Events Reimbursement Program to fund major events, but the proposal failed to pass the Minnesota Legislature before the session adjourned in May.
Meunier stated the SERP fund was modeled on "best practices" from states like Texas, where Kansas City's bid received $78 million from Missouri state funding.
Losing such events is "painful," Meunier said, as the burden falls on the corporate community to collect "tens of millions" in private donations to secure bids.
Rep. Natalie Zeleznikar, D-Fredenberg Township, plans to author another SERP bill for the 2027 legislative session, asserting that "great ideas don't go away.
