Europe: the World's Fastest-Warming Continent
Copernicus said Europe has warmed 2.4C above preindustrial levels, with red alerts in four countries as heatwaves become more frequent.
- Britain, France, Italy and Spain issued red alerts and health warnings this week as the region endures its second heat episode since May.
- This week's heat episode stems from an "omega" pattern, whose shape resembles the Greek letter, drawing hot air from North Africa. Meteo-France forecaster Sebastien Leas called the front "more dynamic" than a typical heat dome.
- Europe is around 2.4C hotter than preindustrial levels, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, compared to a global average of around 1.4C.
- Rising temperatures stem partly from the albedo feedback, where melting ice exposes dark land that absorbs heat. Stricter air quality regulations also contributed by reducing cooling aerosol particles since the 1980s.
- Copernicus director Carlo Buontempo noted that summer anticyclonic conditions have become more frequent over the last 20–30 years, while Europe's connection to the rapidly warming Arctic exacerbates regional temperature increases.
