White House Correspondents’ Dinner rescheduled to July 24
The event will feature enhanced safety measures and new access procedures after April’s shooting, and the association will cover costs for ticket holders.
On Tuesday, The White House Correspondents Association announced a second dinner for Friday, July 24th in Washington, D.C., with Association President Weijia Jiang stating the decision followed thoughtful consideration and will include significantly enhanced safety measures.
In April, a gunman opened fire at the Washington Hilton during the correspondents dinner, forcing President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance and Cabinet members to evacuate while journalists and VIPs took cover; suspect Cole Tomas Allen was charged with attempted assassination and firearms counts.
Jiang described the July event as a more intimate gathering with the association raising funds to cover ticket costs for members; the organization also plans financial support for scholarship winners traveling to Washington, framing it as a statement that violence has no place in American life.
While Trump expressed interest in attending a second dinner following the April shooting, his attendance at the July 24th event remains uncertain, with Jiang making no confirmation of his participation.
The WHCA, facing criticism over April's security failures, outlined plans for significantly enhanced safety measures and new access procedures ahead of the July 24 event, while The White House declined immediate comment on the rescheduled dinner.
