White Earth gravestones get needed refresh
Volunteers have lifted three markers and flagged at least 40 more graves for repair as they work to preserve family and veteran burial sites.
Volunteers from Richville United Methodist Church are partnering with community member Budd Parker to restore grave markers at White Earth Reservation cemeteries, recently leveling three markers and clearing overgrown vegetation at Calvary Cemetery.
Years of neglect left many gravestones sinking below the surface, with Parker estimating over 1,000 graves remain unmarked at the White Earth Reservation cemetery sites.
At least 40 orange flags currently mark tombstones needing care at Calvary Cemetery alone, while Lisa Nelson, leader of RUMC Travel to Serve Ministry, noted this is the group's 14th project.
Parker, a Navy veteran, views the restoration work as honoring community ancestors, including Civil War soldier Antoine Montreuille, with his efforts at the site spanning three decades.
Restoration efforts will expand to St. Columba Episcopal Cemetery, St. Theodore's Catholic Cemetery, and Breck Memorial Episcopal Cemetery, as Nelson stated the group plans to return weekly to address ongoing maintenance needs.
