White Christmas unlikely for most in UK but a few flakes of snow are possible
A 600-mile snow band could bring 2-14cm of snow and subzero temperatures to northern and eastern UK regions around New Year's Day, with wind chill intensifying cold.
- The Met Office forecasts a chance of snow in the far south of England, with most areas experiencing temperatures not rising above 7°C.
- Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said colder, drier conditions give the far south of England the greatest chance of wintry weather, with showers possibly producing sleet or wet snow and one or two flurries.
- Using observing stations, the Met Office defines a `white Christmas` as a snowflake falling during December 25, with 11% of stations recording snow in 2023.
- Any snow this Christmas is unlikely to settle, the Met Office says, so similar 'Christmas card' scenes are unlikely this year despite increased betting on white Christmas locations.
- Historically, records show the 2010 very cold Christmas had 83% of weather stations with snow, while Gainford, Durham holds the record low and recent years have been warmer.
