Watchdog Claims Menopause Supplements Just ‘Expensive Multivitamins’, Industry Responds
Which? said many menopause supplements are just expensive multivitamins, with little evidence for added ingredients and no proven benefit over standard products.
A Which? report revealed last week that many menopause-specific supplements are often just expensive multivitamins, with products frequently containing low levels of active ingredients lacking evidence to justify their higher prices.
Manufacturers often add the "menopause" label to standard pills to inflate costs, yet most supplements undergo no randomized trials to prove benefits unlike regulated medicines, and added botanical ingredients typically lack sufficient evidence.
Clinical lead for women's health Kate Davies warns that aside from vitamin D, many supplements result in women "literally peeing their money down the drain," advising blood tests before purchasing minerals like iron or magnesium.
Social media influencers are "creating the monster" by promoting these products for commissions, capitalizing on women's health challenges, while Davies specifically advises avoiding collagen supplements and gummies described as "full of sugar."
