What the rules for sunbathing naked in your own garden? What the law says
Officials say nude sunbathing is legal in a private garden if it does not alarm others, as temperatures could top 38C.
The UK faces record-breaking temperatures exceeding 38C this week, with the Met Office expressing "growing confidence" that the heat could surpass the 1976 record of 35.6C set in Southampton.
Extreme heat warnings and health alerts have been issued as the UK Health Security Agency expects significant impacts on health and social care services, particularly among those aged 65 and over.
Nick Ross, a law lecturer at ULaw, states that "full public nudity is also not a crime" provided there is no intention to cause alarm or distress, and topless sunbathing remains legal.
Experts advise residents sunbathing in private gardens to shield themselves or inform neighbors, as Nick added: "It's advisable to let the neighbours know this is what you're planning."
Law enforcement typically takes no action regarding nudity unless it causes actual harassment or distress, with the law stating: "it will normally be appropriate to take no action" in such circumstances.
