What speed actually triggers a speed camera? Car expert explains
Experts say modern cameras use radar, sensors and average-speed systems, and drivers can still face a £100 fine for minor speeding.
Modern speed cameras monitor traffic with high accuracy, yet many UK drivers remain confused by myths regarding grace margins. Legally, motorists are liable for fines the moment they exceed the posted speed limit by even 1mph.
Contrary to common belief, there is no universal '10% + 2mph' rule baked into law. Experts from BigWantsYourCar explained that while the National Police Chiefs' Council recommends this margin for officer discretion, it is not a legal threshold.
The minimum penalty for speeding on UK roads is a £100 fine. However, Gareth Thomas, a GoSafe Casualty Reduction Officer, noted that police may offer accredited speed awareness courses as an alternative to fines and penalty points.
Drivers who flash headlights to warn others about speed vans may be in breach of the law under section 89 of the Police Act 1997. GoSafe does not need to be visible to enforce speed limits, Thomas emphasized, as the goal is education and deterrence.
Road safety experts stress that motorists should not rely on supposed loopholes or rumors about enforcement. The safest approach remains driving within posted limits at all times, as enforcement ultimately depends on the individual officer's discretion.
