Rheinmetall to Take over the Mangalia Shipyard in Romania

The partners plan to use the yard for civil and military shipbuilding and to build four naval vessels for the Romanian government.

  • On Monday, German defence group Rheinmetall and Swiss-based shipping company MSC acquired Romania's Mangalia shipyard for €138M on the Black Sea coast.
  • The takeover creates a scalable foundation for regional projects in South-Eastern Europe and strengthens Rheinmetall's industrial presence as a dual-use civil and military shipbuilding hub.
  • For Rheinmetall Naval Systems, the facility will build four naval vessels commissioned by the Romanian government: two 96-metre offshore patrol vessels and two 43-metre diver support vessels.
  • Tim Wagner, CEO of the Naval Systems division, said the expansion will "implement strategic activities" and strengthen Rheinmetall's position in a strategically important market.
  • This project builds on Rheinmetall's established presence through Rheinmetall Automecanica, expanding the company's footprint in the region as finalization approaches in coming weeks.
