Trump Wants a Gasoline Tax Suspension. But It’s Never Been Done and Could Have Serious Drawbacks
Trump says he will work with Congress on a temporary gas tax holiday as lawmakers weigh relief for families and businesses.
President Donald Trump announced Monday he intends to work with Congress to suspend the federal gas tax, currently set at 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel.
Average national gas prices reached $4.52 per gallon as of Monday, a 50% increase since Trump began the war with Iran in February, prompting previous releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Congressional approval is required, as Republicans control both chambers. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida have signaled support for legislation to suspend the tax.
Suspending the tax would deprive the Highway Trust Fund of $3.5 billion monthly in revenue. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget warns this could jeopardize funding for federal highway and public transit programs.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, estimates it would take 13 months of suspension for consumers to recoup Iran war price increases. A 10-gallon fill-up would save only $1.84.
