What a roommate can save you in 100 US cities
Between March 2024 and March 2025, SmartAsset conducted an analysis of rent prices for one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments across 100 major U.S. cities, using data from Zumper to evaluate the cost differences.
The study evaluated potential cost reductions by comparing the expense of sharing a two-bedroom unit with a roommate to renting a one-bedroom apartment individually, assuming rent costs are divided equally.
Results show Cleveland offers the largest rent savings at 48.1%, or $650 monthly, while New York City tenants save $1,670, a 37.4% reduction by splitting rent.
Jersey City ranks just behind the top spot in monthly rent savings with roommates, offering an average reduction of $1,465, while in Tucson, Arizona, the cost benefit of having a roommate is minimal, with savings of only $285 per month.
These findings suggest adding a roommate can significantly reduce housing costs in many cities, helping renters avoid overextending beyond the recommended 28% of gross income on housing.
