Boy Dies After Train Hits Car Near Ballyhaunis

- On Thursday, the 6:15 p.m. Dublin Heuston to Westport train struck a vehicle at a user-operated level crossing near Ballyhaunis, Mayo, shortly before 9 p.m.
- The collision followed an earlier train-tractor incident at a level crossing in Meelaghans near Tullamore, Offaly, where a man sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
- Irish Rail said, "Emergency services are responding to attend to a number of occupants of the car," as personnel secured the Ballyhaunis site and road closures were implemented.
- Westport services are suspended until further notice, with Irish Rail arranging bus transfers to Athlone; significant disruption is expected on Friday morning.
- Irish Rail stated, "It will be tomorrow morning before decisions have been confirmed," citing uncertainty over how Friday's timetable may be affected by both incidents.
