WestJet joins Air Canada in increasing fees for checked baggage
WestJet said the third hike in 2.5 years adds $5 to prepaid bags and $10 at the airport as fuel costs surge.
- On Thursday, WestJet implemented higher checked baggage fees, charging passengers an extra $5 for advance bookings or $10 for airport check-in payments, effective for reservations booked from April 23 onward.
- Soaring jet fuel prices, which have roughly doubled since the war in the Middle East, prompted the increases; the conflict caused an effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global oil supplies.
- Air Canada raised baggage fees last week for basic economy passengers, while Air Transat announced it would cut about 1,000 flights due to energy shocks triggered by the ongoing Strait of Hormuz closure.
- WestJet is suspending the Fort McMurray-Vancouver route effective May 28th and halting Yellowknife-Toronto service on August 30th, with temporary suspensions on transborder routes to Salt Lake City and New York resuming in 2027.
- Vancouver-Based travel agent McKenzie McMillan predicted, "It's going to be an expensive summer to travel," as carriers closely monitor fuel situations and may adjust schedules further if energy prices remain volatile.
