West Nile Virus: 290 Cases and 24 Deaths in Greece — Cyprus Calls for Calm
EODY says 199 patients developed central nervous system symptoms as hospitals remain under pressure and new cases keep rising nationwide.
- According to the Hellenic National Public Health Organisation , Greece has diagnosed 290 domestically acquired West Nile virus infections across 69 municipalities, with 58 new cases confirmed in the past week alone.
- Attica remains the epicenter of this year's surge, accounting for around 166 of the total infections; Thessaly and Central Macedonia follow with 52 cases each, as the EODY describes circulation in Attica as "particularly intense."
- Of the 290 total cases, 199 involved neurological symptoms affecting the central nervous system ; pressure on hospitals remains significant with 63 patients currently hospitalized, 32 in intensive care and 31 in ordinary wards.
- On Thursday, the Cyprus health ministry reported six confirmed West Nile virus infections with two suspected cases under investigation, stating "We are not on alert but continue to monitor the situation closely."
- The EODY has designated additional municipalities as "high risk" based on epidemiological data, even where no human cases have occurred, cautioning that geographical spread of the virus cannot be predicted with certainty.
