West Midlands parents could spend £410 per child on summer days out
Specsavers says 75% of parents feel pressure to plan costly outings, while a free map highlights low-cost sights and local attractions offer summer discounts.
New research from Specsavers reveals parents in the West Midlands could spend an average of £410 per child on summer sightseeing, with 75 per cent of parents feeling pressure to deliver exciting experiences during the school holidays.
Teaming up with 11-year-old wildlife enthusiast Aneeshwar Kunchala, Specsavers curated a crowdsourced map on Tightseeing featuring free UK sights like a "Quite Tall Pointy Rock" in Bristol and "A Very Mossy Wall" in Yorkshire.
Families seeking entertainment have local options, including Warwick Castle and the National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham celebrating its 30th anniversary with new Sea Creature Rescue Squad experiences. LEGOLAND Discovery Centres in Birmingham and Manchester mark LEGO NINJAGO's 15th anniversary with themed activities.
Optometrist Jill Campbell said parents should prioritize free eye tests, cautioning that "It's not always easy to spot vision problems in children." Around one in five children under 10 has a sight condition affecting their ability to experience outdoor activities fully.
Despite the pressure for costly outings, 82 per cent of parents believe their children experience the same wonder on a walk through the woods as on expensive excursions. This finding suggests entertainment need not require high spending to satisfy children.
