McCormack Retires as Vainio Storms to Marathon Success
Vainio led from the start and finished nearly five minutes ahead, giving Finland its first European women’s marathon title.
- On Sunday, Finland's Alisa Vainio won the women's marathon at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, setting a championship record of 2:22:26 while leading from the opening stages.
- Vainio separated from the field within the opening kilometre and completed most of the race alone, her lead reaching three and a half minutes at 25 kilometres and exceeding four minutes by 30 kilometres.
- Finishing almost five minutes ahead of her nearest rival, Vainio secured the largest margin of victory in European Championships history, surpassing Portugal's Rosa Mota's previous record of four minutes and 14 seconds.
- Hungary's Lili Anna Vindics-Toth took silver in 2:27:21, while Great Britain's Abbie Donnelly claimed bronze in 2:27:33; Irish runners Fionnuala McCormack and David McGlynn withdrew after 10km and 25km respectively.
- Finland claimed its first European title in the women's marathon with this victory. Germany's Amanal Petros won the men's race in 2:09.11, ahead of Italian Pletro Riva and Gashau Ayale of Israel.

Finland’s Alisa Vainio won the women’s marathon at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham on Sunday, finishing almost five minutes ahead of her nearest rival and setting a championship record of 2:22:26. The 28-year-old led from the opening stages and completed most of the race alone. Vainio finished four minutes and 55 seconds ahead of Hungary’s Lili Anna Vindics-Tóth, who took silver in 2:27:21.
Favourite of the marathon, the Finn settled the competition by offering the record for the European championships in Birmingham this Sunday.
