Wendy’s to Close Hundreds of U.S. Restaurants, but None in Northwest Indiana
Wendy's will close up to 360 underperforming U.S. locations by 2025 after a 4.7% drop in same-store sales amid inflation and reduced customer visits, interim CEO said.
- On Nov. 7, Wendy's interim CEO Ken Cook said the chain will close a mid-single-digit percentage of its nearly 6,000 U.S. restaurant locations, totaling roughly 240 to 360 stores by the end of 2025.
- With U.S. sales under pressure, Wendy's reported same-store sales down 4.7% and systemwide sales down 2.6% last quarter due to higher food prices, rising rent and lingering inflation.
- Wendy's said it will focus on operations and told investors, `We are working with our U.S. franchisees to evaluate each and every underperforming restaurant in our system, from both the financial and the customer experience perspective, and developing action plans for how to improve both,` Cook said.
- Cook framed the decision as aimed at system health, saying it will improve the "long-term health of the overall system" and free savings to reinvest in other Wendy's franchisees.
- With rivals investing in value, McDonald's reported a 3% revenue increase to $7.08 billion and a $40 million marketing investment amid pressure from value-conscious consumers.
