Yorkshire Water given lowest environmental rating after rise in pollution incidents
The Environment Agency said the company recorded 260 pollution incidents in 2025 and missed six required environmental schemes, the highest total since 2011.
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the Environment Agency downgraded Yorkshire Water to a one-star rating, marking the company's first lowest-grade assessment since 2011 and classifying it as a 'poor performing company' for environmental impact.
Rising pollution levels triggered the downgrade; Yorkshire Water recorded 260 incidents in 2025 versus 151 the previous year, while failing to complete six legally required environmental improvement schemes in west Leeds on time.
Four providers—Yorkshire Water, Southern Water, South West Water, and Thames Water—received one-star ratings as total industry performance fell to 16 stars out of 36, the lowest level since the assessment began.
Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle summoned water company bosses to Whitehall to demand improvement plans, while Yorkshire Water executives face automatic bonus bans under rules introduced last year following poor ratings.
Yorkshire Water pledged an £8.3bn investment program through 2030, including £1.5bn to cut storm overflow discharges and plans to upgrade more than 450 storm overflows by 2030.
